    Superintendent's Message

Dear Parents, Staff, and Community Members,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year.  It is a privilege to be working in the schools and with the teachers, the administrators, and all of the employees of the district to provide a top-notch education for our students.  Having raised my children in this city and through these schools, I continue to be grateful for the superb teaching, the family friendly culture, and the student camaraderie that exists at all five of our schools.

If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions for us, please do not hesitate to get in touch through your site administrator or email me directly at

I look forward to meeting students, parents, and members of the Lafayette community throughout the year and hope to keep you updated on the many good things that happen day-to-day in our classrooms.

    Richard Whitmore

The Lafayette Elementary School District receives inadequate funding from Sacramento, well below the state average amount per student. Despite generous local funding from Lafayette Partners in Education and Lafayette residents through parcel taxes, the District is experiencing a structural deficit caused by inflationary pressure on all expense lines, rising pension liability imposed by the state, and increasing health care costs. The District has made a series of budget cuts to reduce ongoing expenses, but the reductions will not be sufficient to keep up with increasing operating costs.

The Committee’s charge is to review the District budget, analyze and explore current and potential revenue sources, and present recommendations to the Governing Board.  It will meet regularly and intensively upon its inception to provide immediate guidance to the Governing Board.  Diverse membership shall include parents, community leaders, and people whose outside experience might be valuable to the effort.
